🦖 Mrs Dinosaur Sex and Her late Learning
So there I was, a proud adult – or as my young students like to call me a “Dinosaur Sex” – embarking on the journey to develop our very first concept for the Love Land app.
Picture this: an educational game with no enemies, no characters in need of the gamers’ help, no heroic quests, no reward system, and absolutely no storyline. In my mind, it was a masterpiece of pure, unadulterated education. What could possibly go wrong?
Fast forward to the testing phase with students. I eagerly presented our Minimal Viable Product, expecting to see excitement and engagement. Instead, I was met with blank stares and a collective yawn.
It was like I had just handed them a pop quiz on a Friday afternoon.
One brave student finally spoke up, “This is so boring!” Ouch. It hit me hard, and the irony wasn’t lost on me – there I was, feeling like a student being schooled by the very audience I was trying to teach.
Lesson learned: If you want to create something for young people, you’ve got to listen to young people. Their feedback was brutally honest, but it was exactly what we needed. We went back to the drawing board, added enemies, heroes, rewards, and a real story. And guess what? It worked!
đź’ˇSo here’s my takeaway: Learn from the young people, don’t be afraid of direct feedback, embrace it, and keep learning—even if you’re a dinosaur like me.
